Unions

Michael Costello writes about the Australian Government's attempt to emasculate the unions.

One of the Conservative movements most successful tricks of modern times (in all Western Countries) has been to portray unions as irrelevant, working against employees' interests and a barrier to modernisation. The public, on the whole, seem to have fallen for these lies. But while they spend their four weeks paid holiday per year enjoying themselves whilst getting maternity pay, sick pay, a 40hour week etc they might like to reflect on why they enjoy these benefits. They sure as hell didn't come about due to the compassion and decency of corporations nor the wisdom of Conservative politicans. The main force for improvements in worker's rights was the union movement and if they are reduced to an ineffective rump be prepared for these conditions to be as good as it's ever going to get.
